GRUNGE

The question was nagging me. What style best describes TRASH? People asked. Our messy life in Berlin did not seem to fit any one definition, same as our clothes. In the end I settled for grunge: messy, distressed, chaotic. Here is some background info on the grunge lifestyle I collected and put together from. my research.

“Grunge” is a term that has several connotations depending on the context in which it is used. Below are some of its various meanings:

Music Genre

Grunge is most commonly associated with a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s, primarily in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, particularly Seattle. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains are some of the most well-known acts. The music is characterised by its “dirty” sound, with heavy, distorted guitars and a focus on authenticity and emotive expression over technical mastery or upbeat themes. Lyrics often dealt with topics like social alienation, apathy, confinement, and a desire for freedom.

Fashion

Grunge fashion emerged alongside the music genre, and it similarly emphasised a kind of unpolished, raw aesthetic. The look included items like flannel shirts, ripped jeans, combat boots, and band t-shirts. Unlike other fashion trends that were carefully curated, this fashion had an “I don’t care” attitude, often looking dishevelled or mismatched on purpose.

Design

In the world of graphic design, “grunge” refers to a style that is messy, chaotic, and often uses irregular, distressed, or torn elements. Grunge design often seeks to emulate a kind of “worn” or “vintage” look, frequently incorporating textures like paper, wood, or fabric.

Cultural Movement

In a broader cultural sense, grunge is sometimes used to describe the disillusioned youth of the late 1980s and early 1990s, as well as the various art, fashion, and politics associated with that era. It was a reaction against the excess and artificiality that characterized much of the mainstream culture of the 1980s.

Adjective

As an adjective, “grunge” can describe anything that has a dirty or raw appearance. For example, you could describe a distressed piece of furniture as “grunge.”

Overall

In summary, the term can refer to various interconnected or standalone aspects of music, fashion, design, and culture. It often carries undertones of rebellion against mainstream or polished aesthetics and attitudes, emphasizing instead authenticity, raw emotion, and a certain kind of disheveled beauty.

The Subversive Power of Grunge Clothes

Ever felt the thrill of donning something a little on the wild side? Whether it’s a shredded jean jacket or a leather mini, grunge clothes have an allure that’s hard to ignore. Let’s take a ride on the rebellious side of fashion, shall we?

What Makes Clothes “Grunge”?

Firstly, let’s clear the air. By “grunge,” we’re not talking about cheap or low quality. We’re talking about clothes that scream rebellion, that defy social norms, and make a statement.

The Cultural Roots of Grunge Clothing

Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rebellion

From Elvis Presley’s leather jacket to Kurt Cobain’s flannels, music genres like rock ‘n’ roll and grunge have long celebrated this aesthetic.

Grunge and Counter-Culture

It’s more than just fashion; it’s a lifestyle. Grunge fashion became a way to challenge societal norms and offer an alternative perspective on what’s considered “acceptable” clothing.

The Psychology of Grunge Clothes

Identity and Self-expression

Wearing grunge clothes isn’t just about looking different; it’s about feeling different. It’s about tapping into a side of yourself that doesn’t conform, that seeks the road less travelled.

The Call to Nonconformity

We believe in creating our own trends -this aesthetic is a call to break free from societal expectations.

Social Media and the Celebration of Grunge

Instagram, TikTok—you name it, grunge clothes have found a haven where rebellion is not just accepted, but celebrated.

The Gender Dynamics

Breaking Stereotypes

Grunge fashion offers a unique opportunity for both men and women to break free from gender norms and express themselves authentically.

Empowerment and Freedom

Who said fashion couldn’t be liberating? In a grunge outfit, you’re not just a body; you’re a statement.

Why Grunge Clothes Matter

Beyond the shock value, the clothes offer a platform for self-expression, freedom, and even social critique. They challenge us to reconsider our preconceived notions about fashion, identity, and culture.

Conclusion

In a world that often feels rigid and judgmental, grunge clothes offer a refreshing avenue for personal and collective rebellion. They aren’t just articles of clothing; they’re badges of freedom.

TRASH: express your “INNER ME”

TRASH are the clothes we like to wear; we created the clothes to visualise our Berlin way of life in the city’s underground. We like to think of ourselves as creative types, we chose to create TRASH to express imperfection through creativity. Our label is only on the inside because in the inside is who we really are. No labels outside.

TRASH IS ABOUT THE STORY OF WHO WE REALLY ARE
